time stamp UTC |
Definition: |
qualifier providing a verifiable binding between a data items' representation and a date and time value based on the timescale coordinated universal time (UTC) |
Note: |
NOTE 1 A time stamp token may serve different functions:
- to assign to an event, action or data items an unambiguous date and time-value with respect to a common time reference;
- to differentiate events, actions or data items among different points in time with respect to a common time reference.
NOTE 2 A time stamp for the timescale UTC may be produced by the clock of the local computer. This may be sufficient for events or actions limited to the local computer. The local clock of a computer can be easily configured with the result of not being safe, inconsistent and not reliable. This method of time stamping is not suited for interaction with other computers, persons, machinery, etc. on an international level, especially if exact time is a critical issue. For this case the service of a time stamp service provider (e.g. https://www.dfn.de/) is required, which is serving as a common time reference.
NOTE 3 Time stamping is mandatorily based on a given timescale; here on the coordinated universal time (UTC).
NOTE 4 This property is foreseen to present in the UTC timescale representations of time up to a resolution of 1 ns based on the representation in conformance with ISO 8601-1: 2019. Truncation of positions after decimal sign (of second) is not permitted. |
Remark: |
REMARK 1 The timescale coordinated universal time (UTC), see IEV 713-05-20, is continuous with discontinuities due to leap seconds, standard time due to summer time and winter time,
REMARK 2 For physical and technical applications, a timescale with quantitative marks is preferred, based on a chosen initial instant together with a unit of measurement.
REMARK 3 Durations or periods needs be measured within the same timescale. |
