unit of the length commonly used in the navigation and aviation according to ISO 31-1:1992: 1 sea mile = 1 852 metre

Note:
The fact that 54 sea miles correspond to about 100 kilometres arises from the original definition of the sea mile (1 meridian minute) and the oldest definition of 1 metre (the 10 millionth part of the distance between North Pole and equator). The sea mile is a special unity which is used in the see and aerial navigation to express the distance. This value was accepted 1929 at the first Extraordinary international hydrographical meeting in Monaco by agreements under the name "international sea mile". There is no signal agreed at international level.
