Term: CIE 1964 uniform colour space
Synonym1:
Synonym2:
Synonym3:
Symbol:
Definition: three-dimensional, approximately uniform colour space produced by plotting in rectangular coordinates U*, V*, W*, quantities defined by the equations:
  • W*=25Y1/317U*=13W*(uun)V*=13W*(vvn)

Note 1 to entry: Y, u, v describe the colour stimulus considered, and un, vn describe a specified white achromatic stimulus, where u=u, v=23v; un=un', v n = 2 3 v n ' MathType@MTEF@5@5@+= feaagKart1ev2aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbbjxAHX garuavP1wzZbItLDhis9wBH5garmWu51MyVXgaruWqVvNCPvMCG4uz 3bqee0evGueE0jxyaibaieYdi9WrpeeC0lXdh9vqqj=hEeea0xXdbb a9frFj0=OqFfea0dXdd9vqaq=JfrVkFHe9pgea0dXdar=Jb9hs0dXd bPYxe9vr0=vr0=vqpWqaaeaaciWacmGadaGadeaaeaGaauaaaOqaai aadAhadaWgaaWcbaGaaeOBaaqabaGccqGH9aqpdaWcbaqcbaAaaGqa aiaa=jdaaeaacaWFZaaaaOGaamODamaaDaaaleaacaqGUbaajeaWba accmGaa43jaaaaaaa@400D@ .

See also "CIE 1976 uniform-chromaticity-scale diagram".

Note 2 to entry: The difference between two stimuli, ΔE*, is defined as the Euclidean distance between the points representing them in U*V*W* space and calculated as:

  • Δ E * = [ ( Δ U * ) 2 + ( Δ V * ) 2 + ( Δ W * ) 2 ] 1/2 .

Note 3 to entry: The CIE 1964 uniform colour space is obsolete (except that it is still used in the calculation of the colour rendering index). The currently recommended object colour spaces are the CIE 1976 L*a*b* colour space and the CIE 1976 L*u*v* colour space.
