Definition: thin layer of superconductor

Note 1 to entry: Superconducting films are classified into “thin” and “thick”, although the exact boundary between the two is subject to changes in the fabrication technology. The current definitions are by convention as follows.

- superconducting thin film: superconductor film of average thickness less than a given typical value, assumed conventionally to be 1 µm, that is typically obtained by PVD (physical vapour deposition), CVD (chemical vapour deposition) or other techniques;

- superconducting thick film: superconductor film of average thickness of more than some typical value, assumed conventionally to be between 1 µm to 10 µm, that is typically obtained by screen printing, by doctor blading or by dip-coating methods.

Note 2 to entry: This entry was numbered 815-13-27 in IEC 60050-815:2015.
