Note 2 to entry: The transducer array is typically oriented horizontally.

Note 3 to entry: Sidescan sonars can be deployed by towing, mounting over the side of a surface vessel (as on a pole), or mounting on an autonomous underwater vehicle or remotely operated vehicle, among other methods.

Note 4 to entry: In many deployment configurations, two linear transducer arrays are operated synchronously, one on port and one on starboard, both in the usual horizontal orientation.

Note 5 to entry: A major use of sidescan sonar is seafloor imaging.
