line intended mainly for transfer of signals
Note 1 to entry: A transmission line in telecommunications and electronics is characterized by minimal losses due to radiation.
Note 2 to entry: The term "transmission line" and the word "line" with a qualifier are frequently restricted to a line used for guiding electromagnetic waves in the TEM mode, commonly a two-wire or coaxial arrangement of conductors.
Note 3 to entry: In English, the term "transmission line" has different meanings in general (see IEV 151-12-43), in circuit elements (see IEV 131-12-86) and in electric power systems (see IEV 151-12-31).
Note 4 to entry: In French, the term "ligne de transmission" has a different meaning as circuit element (see IEV 131-12-86).
